Out with the Old, In with the New - Nespresso

My love of coffee has gone nowhere but up over the course of my life. My obsession included looking up the blogs of coffee reviewers from all over the world. I was lucky enough to live in the same neighborhood of one of the top reviewed places in the world, Blue Bottle, in San Francisco for many years. Served out of a garage it was nothing short of amazing.

My step-father is European, and my espresso passion has grown to nothing short of "snobbish" proportions. After my first trip to Paris I was convinced I would never be able to enjoy coffee in America again. We have done our best by using the $1000 espresso machine we purchased a few years ago, but still, nothing could compare to Paris or Blue Bottle. That is, nothing until we tasted Nespresso..

First Taste

While my Step Dad and Mother were traveling Switzerland this winter visiting family they were introduced to their first taste of Nespresso. In the couple years since their last trip it turned out that Nespresso had spread like wild-fire in Europe. Europeans are notorious for being coffee snobs and somehow this machine had infiltrated houses in every country. Coffee just isn't coffee anymore unless it's Nespresso.

During that trip it was clear that Nespresso needed to be added to our family collection. The machinee was brought back from Switzerland and a new love was born. We have it right next to our $1000 espresso machine that sees little action now compared to our $300 Nespresso Machine. Every drink has become nothing short of a treat.

Nespresso Capsules

With 16 varieties of Nespresso you are sure to find favorites that suite your taste buds. Nespresso machines make both espresso size drinks and full coffee drink size (Called "Lungo"). They come in wide degrees of strength, which is in reference to flavor only, not caffeine content. Nespresso has a ranking system for each capsules strength on a scale from 1-10. Beans are sources specifically for each variety from regions around the globe. Decaf espresso and Lungo sizes are also available.

Capsules can only be purchased directly from Nespresso and work out to about 55 cents per capsule. Depending on your current habits this can be either much less expensive or much more expensive for you- Someone who drinks $5 Starbucks will be saving a ton, where someone drinking Folgers coffee brewed in a pot at home might have sticker shock. Either way, the change will be a fantastic improvement.

Nespresso Capsule Special Edition Flavor Onirio

Nespresso has just released it's first special edition capsule, named Onirio. With a white capsule, you Nespresso shows the elegant flavor it was aiming for with this Etheopian inspired coffee creation. The beans are a blend of Arabica from Sidamo and Arabica from Yrgacheffe in South West Ethiopia. Coffee Arabica is believed to be the first coffee species ever to be cultivated, having a history of over 1,000 years.

Onirio is described as being infused with white flower, jasmine, and orange blossom notes- Boasting refined flowery and fruity aromas.

Accessories

So far, with Nespresso being relatively new, accessories are few. The most popular two are Capsule holders and Milk frothers. Milk frothers do come come with several models, but can be bought separately for those who either forgot or couldn't afford one when they first bought the machine- The exact same frothers that come with the machines.

I see a lot of popularity coming in capsule holders. There are so many unique places that capsules can be held that the amount of variations on them is limitless. There are already wall hangers, rotating holders, stand alone units, and more. There is joy in staring at your collection of capsules and choosing your favorite- Displaying them only adds to that joy.
